I'm in love. (12/50)

Added to Scrapbook 2009.

Big thanks go to JuJu [info]dreamxobscene and Hannah [info]tongueeatcheek for telling me --more than once-- that I have to read this.

I always read with a pen because I like to underline the parts and words I like, in addition to reading them a couple of more times before moving on. With this book, though, it was very hard because I would've underline the entire book.

Dear God:
The purpose of this letter is to familiarize you with facts which either have escaped your notice, or which you have chosen to ignore.
...
That's why I changed the little black girl's eyes for her, and I didn't touch her; not a finger did I lay on her. But I gave her those blue eyes she wanted. Not for pleasure, and not for money. I did what You did not, could not, would not do: I looked at that ugly little black girl, and I loved her. I played You. And it was a very good show!

I, I have cause a miracle. I gave her the eyes. I gave her the blue, blue, two blue eyes. Cobalt blue. A streak of it right out of your own blue heaven. No one else will ever see her blue eyes. But she will. And she will live happily ever after. I, I have found it meet and right so to do.

Now you are jealous. You are jealous of me.

You see? I, too, have created. Not aboriginally, like you, but creation is a heady wine, more for the taster than the brewer.

I can't wait to start reading Beloved, but before that I'm throwing a Jane Austen into the mix.

I loved the Bluest Eye. There were too many parts that had to be underlined but I had taken the book from the library so underlining was a big no no.

I bought Beloved and kinda chickened out, idk, I read at night and the mention of haunted houses scare me. So I took Mercy from the library.

Yes, that made no sense. I'll just go back to my math notes.

Awww, heheh. I mostly read at night, too, but whenever someone else mentions it, I think of Clive Barker's The Damnation Game. That one scared the crap out of me, but I couldn't stop reading it at night 'cos I was hungry for the thrill, I guess.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Toni Morrison. Sometimes she actually gives me chills with her writing. Beloved is definitely her best known/most read book, but The Bluest Eye and Song of Solomon are my favorites.

I want to meet her and give her a hug for being so damn good.

I even literally cried while reading because her writing is so beautiful. All the rest of her books are on my wishlist. I have Beloved, and I've just ordered Paradise 'cos I found it for $3. Hopefully I'll get a hold of the rest soon too.
